First Tone’s 1, the third release on the modemain imprint, finds Duane Pitre (solo works on Important Records, Root Strata, NNA Tapes) and Turk Dietrich (duo works with Belong and Second Woman on kranky, Spectrum Spools, and Tresor) early in the collaborative process that would ultimately culminate with their 2019 Spectrum Spools LP Reactions. 1 is the first in a series of archival releases documenting the evolution of their creative partnership. This document serves as the marker for the moment their combined sounds generated that essential spark of a great collaboration - the moment experimentation finds its unique path forward.

On “Ex Conceit I,” the first of the two long-form pieces of 1, crystalline tones rooted in Pitre’s work with just intonation swell and collide with Dietrich’s sense of landscape and longing. Sounds spool forward to reveal an unknown place while leaving enough space to think of home until a strange light blurs out the horizon. “Ex Conceit II” exists somewhere between a subversion and submersion of the first, as if looking up to see the same unusual location reflected on a liquid surface as the listener descends. 1 does not exist to enhance an environment or to quell a personal state, but instead creates an environment all its own, inviting the listener in to find meaning within the expertly constructed sonic geography of two musicians beginning something new together.

As with all modemain editions, accompanying artwork has been chosen, designed, and produced with great care. The album art features a 2014 cyanotype work by French artist Manon Bellet titled Sous surface, and has been printed on risograph in New Orleans by Constance for the physical cassette edition.
